What is color binning and SDCM?

Color binning is the process of categorizing LEDs based on their color correctness, brightness, and consistency. This is done to ensure that the LEDs used in a single product have a similar color look and brightness, resulting in consistent light color and brightness.SDCM (Standard Deviation Color Matching) is a color accuracy measurement that indicates how much variability there is between the colors of different LEDs. SDCM values are frequently used to describe the color consistency of LEDs, notably LED strips.

The lower the SDCM value, the better the LEDs’ color accuracy and consistency. For example, an SDCM value of 3 indicates that the difference in color between two LEDs is scarcely discernible to the human eye, whereas an SDCM value of 7 indicates that there are discernible color changes between the LEDs.

An SDCM value of 3 or lower is typically considered to be the best for non-waterproof LED strips. This guarantees that the LED colors are consistent and accurate, which is critical for generating a uniform and high-quality lighting effect. However, it is crucial to note that a lower SDCM value may also come with a larger price tag, so when picking an LED strip with a specific SDCM value, you should consider your budget as well as your application requirements.

SDCM (Standard Deviation of Color Matching) is a measurement of an LED light source’s color consistency. A spectrometer or a colorimeter will be required to evaluate SDCM. Here are the actions to take:
